Onondaga Sargent Viburnum
Onondaga Sargent Viburnum - Viburnum sargentii.
Outwardly similar to Kalina ordinary, but much more decorative. Spreading shrub 2-3 m high, especially beautiful when blooming young bronze-red leaves, during flowering (late May) and fruiting (early October). Large corymbose inflorescences have pinkish-white sterile flowers along the edges, and fruiting burgundy in the center. Autumn leaf color is bright orange-red. The berries are red, small, bitter in taste.
Just like with viburnum vulgaris: the bark, leaves, flowers and fruits are used for medicinal purposes.
Viburnum Sargent is shade-tolerant, winter-hardy, used in single and group plantings in the garden and along the banks of reservoirs.
When sown in autumn, seedlings appear only after a year. The first two years the seedlings grow slowly, and from the third year their growth intensifies.
Plants grown from seeds bear fruit in 4-5 years.
Agrotechnics: viburnum prefers well-lit places and moist soil. To accelerate the germination of seeds, stratification is used in two stages at a variable temperature. To start root growth, a temperature of +18 + 20 °C is required, and for the passage of a dormant state -3 ... -5 °C. Therefore, after 2.5-3 months of warm stratification, the seeds are placed for 3-4 months in cold stratification conditions and only then they are sown in the ground.
Before sowing, a long washing of seeds in cold water is recommended. The first two years the seedlings grow slowly, and from the third year their growth intensifies. Plants are transplanted to a permanent place at a distance of 1.5-2 m. Further care consists in constant watering, top dressing in early spring and autumn.
